Pingyao first impressions

We arrived in Pingyao on Thursday morning having spent the night on the soft sleeper from Beijing. Staying at the Yide hotel within the city walls, we were pleasantly surprised to find our room ready at 9.30 am!

A quick shower, a spot of breakfast then we hit the streets. If you want an idea of how a Chinese city looked centuries ago then Pingyao's the place to come.

It's just stunning. Yep, the two main streets are a bit touristy but make no mistake, this isn't a theme park, there's a functioning city at work here. Even the monkey thinks so.

You can get a 3-day pass for all the city's museums and the walls for 150rmb, so that's what we did.

Pics of the city walls to follow...
